Vol. 8, No. 2 | Breakfast for Breakfast
Hey Everyone!
This is the newsletter where I ramble about breakfast. That’s it. That’s the intro.
Here are the ramblings:
I was chatting with someone at a bar recently about bookstores as drinking places. It made me remember Kramer Books in DC. I googled it and I’m happy to see that it still exists. I loved it in my early 20s. Now as I approach 40, I long for this type of space. What could be better than a bookstore with cocktails and an all-day cafe?
I’ve decided to host intimate breakfasts at my house. I’m starting to realize that I landed on breakfast because I like cafes. I knew I wanted to host something regularly but as much as I love dinner parties it didn’t seem like the right thing to commit to frequently. Breakfast is such a simple wholesome meal. It makes it easy to gather good company.
It’s possible that I’m also doing breakfast because I opted out of a large dining space and instead created a breakfast nook with a pedestal table and a sitting area. This is not conducive to a large spread. The more I think about it, the space looks like a cafe.
Every time my mom visits, she tells me I need a large dining table. In eight months, I’ve yet to host people for dinner nor do I have the desire to. I just can’t make sense of buying something that I’ll need once a year.
Every time my mom visits, she also asks why she has to take off her shoes. As if I didn’t always have to take off my shoes in her house.
My mom sent me this Instagram video. This is all you need to know about Jamaican mothers to understand her tone in the previous two statements. And to also understand that there were many more comments.
Clearly, my mother is not invited to these breakfasts. Although people really like her and think she’s hilarious and really nice.
Additional clarity: no I’m not inviting people over to my house at 8am. This meal will take place around 11am. No, that doesn’t make it brunch. I love brunch, but that’s too much to commit to. Simplicity and good company is the name of this game. Or this breakfast rather.
Hope you’re all well!
Shannon
P.S. - I wrote a piece on Ok Yaki for a new Atlanta alt-weekly. It’s an 8-page insert in the Atlanta Intown paper. Grab it if you see it! I was going to write more about it in this newsletter, but my breakfast tangent ran on much longer than I intended. I’ll say more next week.
