Vol. 7, No. 4 | What I Don't Miss About Running A Restaurant
I walked into a restaurant this week and the owner had out their business checkbook on the table. You know the huge three-ring binder with three checks to a page? Well, that one. It gave me the worst case of PTSD. Even writing this now makes me cringe and want to hide under the covers. I disliked nothing more than having to write checks, no matter how big or small.
Here are some of the other things that I don’t miss:
Dealing with the garbage company. You’d be amazed at how many times they’d forget to pick up the trash. And there is nothing worst than having a restaurant with overflowing days old trash. And being on hold for hours, then having to explain to someone why they need to come pick it up ASAP. (I seriously considered starting a garbage company.)
Internet being more expensive because it’s a business. How is this acceptable? Four times more? Really? It’s the principle for me.
Going to Restaurant Depot. Another thing that makes me shudder whenever I drive past it. No one wants to be in Restaurant Depot.
Be kind to restaurant people. They are fighting the good fight.
I realize that this newsletter is shorter than usual. I went to a restaurant earlier today and their music selection gave me a headache. They were playing techno music in an environment (based on the decor ) that called for something much more mellow. It felt so disruptive to the dining experience. I don’t mind techno in places where it fits (I am from the Jersey Shore after all). It didn’t fit here. The staff said they’ve tried telling the owner that it’s weird, but he won’t listen.
Music choices matter.
That is one thing that I do miss. I loved creating a great playlist.
