Sometimes, We Get Change from the Strip Club
I had an early morning call from the alarm company one Sunday. After it was clear that nobody actually broke into the building and instead it was just someone pulling at the door, I decided to treat myself to a chai and bagel from Octane. It was the only way to feel better about waking up after only getting about three hours sleep from the disastrous event the night before. Let’s skip that whole story and just say it ended with me calling the cops as a guest threatened to call their phantom friend after they became belligerent because they didn’t want to pay the final bill for the event. Sigh. Thankfully, this is the only time this has ever happened.
Anyway, I stumbled into Octane, one of my favorite places in the city. After I placed my order, I handed over a twenty. The cashier looked at me and then politely, slightly embarrassed asked if there was any way I could pay with a card because it was Sunday and they didn’t have any cash. I understood this struggle all too well and gladly paid with my card.
I started to tell him that he should have tried the strip club for some cash, but I decided it was probably inappropriate. Then I told myself that he probably already knew this but he couldn't go because it was too early in the morning. (Welcome to the long drawn out conversations in my head.)
I remembered this on New Year's Eve because of course it was Saturday morning and I realized that we didn't have cash at the space. Fortunately, the bank was open and I made it with 30 minutes to spare. Yippee!
When I thought about running a bar, one of the things I never anticipated was having to go to the strip club to get singles. If someone would have mentioned, oh, your Saturday evenings or Sunday mornings might include going to the strip club every now and then, I would have been perplexed by this statement, but now I realize this makes all the sense in the world.
It's not the ideal scenario. Crispy ones are not terrible behind a bar. But hey, I’ll take the new stack of ones instead of the alternative. I’m not exactly sure what the alternative is, but I don’t really want to find out either.
Happy New Year! I really missed you guys and I hope your year is off to a great start. I've been ticking away over here the past few months trying to tweak some things and also deal with some tough things. I'll tell you about that at another time. My goal for this year is to not shrink (no, I don't mean my height). I did that too often, so I've been working on it for the past few months. It's resulted in this new amazing burst of creative freedom that I can't quite explain. Hopefully, as we roll out some new things this year, it will make more sense.
