Vol. 6, No. 4 | Afro-Caribbean Food Is Having Its Moment
Hey Ya’ll!
I’m feeling particularly jubilant this week. Maybe it’s the warm weather that we’ve had for the past few days. (I’m just a different person when the sun is out.) I’m not entirely sure what it is, but I’m riding the wave.
Here’s what’s been on my mind this week:
I’ve spent the past week shadowing Scotley Innis as he prepares to open his new restaurant, The Continent in Atlanta. I’ve missed the energy of those first few weeks before a place opens. It's also just been good to see that restaurants are still opening despite covid because we’ve lost so many good ones over the past 12 months. It helps keep me optimistic. Anyway, I'll post an interview with Scotley next week.
If you haven’t noticed Afro-Caribbean food is having its moment (or rather…it’s beginning to). In Paris, 28-year old Mory Sacko of Malian/Senegalese origin just won his first Michelin star for his restaurant MoSuke. He’s the first chef creating West or Central African food to be awarded. Also included in the guide is Elis Bond who received a Michelin plate for his Paris-based restaurant Mi Kwabo which blends his Haitian background with his wife’s Beninese cuisine.
You don’t have to go as far as Paris to experience this culinary uprising. If you’re in Atlanta, in addition to the Continent, check out what Chef Day is doing at Apt4B.
I’m now realizing that yes, this is pretty much all that I’ve done this week.
This and trying to keep up with all the new covid travel rules before the Holy Sip Jamaica dinner. Overall though, I think these were steps we should have taken a long time ago.
The only other memory I have is randomly thinking about my friend Royce saying, “Once you go maple, you can’t go back.” He invited me over for pancakes months ago and I brought over some maple syrup and now he turns his nose up at anything else.
Oh! Also, I got an email this weekend from Dancing Goats coffee shop that they’re now selling a single origin Kenyan coffee from Nyeri! I haven’t tried it, but I’m praying it’s great.
Hope you’re all well!
Shannon
